Shola is the inside, or pith, of weeds that grow in the mangrove areas of Bengal, Orissa and Assam. It is a natural organic material that looks and behaves a lot like thermocol.

Traditionally, shola was used to embellish statues of gods and goddesses, as hanging decor and as headgear for weddings. Today, craftsmen have adapted their craft to many contemporary designs, such as Shola garlands/gajras.

The tradition of sholapith craft stretches throughout Bengal. The community which is involved in Sholapith craft is traditionally known as the Malakars. About 5,000 artisans practice this minutely intricate craft. Craftsmen spend months on each piece.
In every Bengali custom and ritual, one finds the ubiquitous “Chandmala”, “Kodomphool”, and garlands of Shola. Toys, accessories, and decorative items made of Shola are both eco-friendly and aesthetic.

•    Handmade by local artisans in West Bengal
•    Can be used in any occasion, including pujas
•    Great alternative to thermocol flowers
•    Lasts much longer than fresh flowers, or thermocol
